Our Commitment to Accuracy
WVFC is a civic home for our neighbors. That means accuracy matters more than speed. Every fact you see on a county page is drawn from an official primary source whenever one exists, and clearly marked as pending when one does not.
Our standard
We value accuracy over speed. If we cannot confirm a fact against an official primary source, we do not publish it as verified. We never guess, infer, or fabricate information, and we never substitute a plausible answer for a missing one.
Primary sources we use
- Official county government websites
- West Virginia Legislature (wvlegislature.gov)
- West Virginia Secretary of State
- West Virginia Department of Education
- U.S. Census Bureau (Decennial Census, ACS)
- Congress.gov and official congressional sites
- BoardDocs where a county publishes to it
- Officially published meeting schedules and public notices
How we mark pending information
When information cannot yet be verified, we display a consistent pending notice rather than a blank space or a placeholder fact. Where possible, we include the reason — for example, awaiting a primary source, no stable public URL, no machine-readable source, or conflicting official sources. This lets you see exactly what we're working on rather than guessing at gaps.
Last Verified vs. Last Updated
These are two different things and we track them separately.
- Last Verified
- The date factual information on the page was reviewed against its primary source. Framework or design updates do not change this date.
- Last Updated
- The date any content on the page changed — including layout, wording, or accessibility improvements. It can change without a re-verification.
Report a correction
If something looks wrong or out of date, please tell us. Reports feed a moderation queue and nothing publishes automatically.
